MP Ziad Aboultaif Donates Equivalent of Annual Raise to Local Edmonton Charities

April 3, 2020
Edmonton, AB – Ziad Aboultaif, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Manning and Shadow Minister for Digital Government, today issued the following statement regarding the pay raise for Members of Parliament which came into effect on April 1, 2020:
“The pay raise for Members of Parliament comes in the midst of a stressful time for Canadians. Many families have seen their income deeply affected by business closures, reduced work hours and having to stock up on essentials for what seems to be an unknown period of time.”
“Many parents now have to worry about working from home while caring for their children at the same time as childcare spaces and schools are closed. Seniors are struggling to meet their basic needs while trying to stay safe and healthy. Foodbanks are facing unprecedented demand for non-perishables and are pleading for donations to keep up. This is not an appropriate time for Members of Parliament to be receiving a pay raise when Canadians are hurting and need income.”
“Canada’s Conservatives have raised these concerns with the government to no avail. It is up to the Liberals to decide to bring forward legislation to make changes if they see fit.”
“In the meantime, I will be donating the equivalent to my pay increase for the year to local Edmonton charities. This pandemic is affecting us all as we are worried about the health and wellbeing of our family members and friends.”
“Accepting this pay raise would not be right when so many Canadians are struggling to stay afloat. We are in this together.”
